Dad will never write his stories down. He'll happily talk for hours.

Told turns his stories into a beautifully written hardcover book — from ordinary phone calls. A friendly interviewer rings him once a week, he talks, we write, and the book arrives before Father's Day. Nothing for him to learn or type.

Why this exists

You've heard the stories a hundred times. Your kids might never hear them once.

The apprenticeship. The old house. How he met Mum. What his own father was like. He tells them well — around the barbecue, in the car, at Christmas lunch. But ask him to write any of it down and it will never happen. Not because the stories don't matter. Because sitting down to write a book is an enormous ask, and talking is easy.

Told is built on that one simple fact. He doesn't write a word. He just talks — on the phone, the way he already loves to — and we do everything else.

How it works

We call. He talks. You get the book.

1

We call him

Once a week, at a time that suits him, our friendly interviewer rings Dad for a relaxed chat about his life. It works on any phone — mobile or landline. No apps, no logins, no internet needed. There is nothing for him to set up or learn.

2

He tells his stories

The interviewer asks thoughtful questions and follows the conversation naturally — if he mentions the farm, it asks about the farm. Each call runs as long as he's enjoying himself. Six calls over six weeks is enough to cover a lifetime.

3

You receive the book

We shape the recordings into beautifully written chapters, in his voice, and print a premium hardcover here in Australia. It arrives at your door before Father's Day, ready to wrap.

What the calls are like

Questions that get him going

Every interview is a real conversation, not a survey. Here are the kinds of questions he'll be asked:

And when he answers, it listens — and asks the next question a genuinely curious person would ask.

The book itself

A proper hardcover, made to be kept

Not a photo album, not a scrapbook — a real book. His stories, professionally written into chapters that read the way he sounds, printed and bound in Australia.

A finished Told book lying open to a chapter titled 'Chapter Three — The years that shaped me', showing professionally typeset memoir text

Illustrative sample — the layout and writing style of a finished Told book.

Who's behind this

A real person, on the Gold Coast

Daine Reid, founder of Told

I'm Daine Reid, and Told is my business — registered in Australia, ABN 67 571 245 589, run from the Gold Coast. I started it because my own family has a drawer full of loose photos and a head full of stories that were never going to write themselves down.

If you have any question before ordering, email me directly at daine@dainereid.com and you'll get a reply from me, not a ticket number.

Fair questions

Things you're probably wondering

What if Dad doesn't like talking on the phone?

The first call starts gently — easy questions about childhood that almost everyone enjoys answering. There's no pressure to perform and no time limit. In our experience the "he won't talk" dads are usually the ones who won't talk about feelings on demand — but ask them about their first car or their old job and good luck getting a word in. If he genuinely isn't enjoying it after the first call, tell us and we'll refund you in full.

Is this AI? Will it feel robotic?

Yes, the interviewer is AI, and we'd rather tell you plainly than have you find out later. It's why we can offer this at $199 instead of the thousands a human ghostwriter costs. On the phone it sounds warm and natural, listens properly, and asks follow-up questions based on what he actually says — if he mentions the shearing shed, it asks about the shearing shed. And the writing is checked by a real person before anything goes to print. Most storytellers settle in within the first ten minutes; it's a conversation, not a form to fill in.

What happens to the recordings?

They're yours, not ours. The recordings are stored securely in Australia, they are never sold or shared with anyone, and if you ask us to delete them we delete them — simple as that. We use them for one purpose only: writing his book.

What if he misses a call?

Nothing bad happens. We simply try again, or reschedule for a time that suits him better — before his golf, after his nap, whenever works. The schedule has plenty of room built in, so a missed call here or there won't put Father's Day delivery at risk.

Is this a scam?

A fair question, and the right one to ask of any page like this. Here's what you can check: Told is a registered Australian business (ABN 67 571 245 589), run by a real person, Daine Reid, on the Gold Coast — my name and face are on this page. Payment goes through Stripe, the same secure system used by major Australian retailers, so your card details never touch us. And the guarantee is in writing above: miss Father's Day, full refund, no questions asked.

Why only $199?

Because you're early. These first twenty books are the founding batch — I'm personally overseeing each one, and in return for the lower price I'll be asking founders for honest feedback and, if you're genuinely happy, permission to share your words on this page. Once the twenty are gone, the price moves to $299 and stays there.
